Enter the aural space of Natura Morta and be overtaken by delicately crafted realms of disturbing sonic experience. The first track on this debut release sounds like a bad psychedelic episode experienced in the intimate quarters of a steam shower.
"Natura Morta," translated from Italian, means "still life," though the literal translation is “dead nature.” The music on this album evokes both of these concepts. It is soft and slow paced, conjuring stillness. The pieces are composed of distorted and abrasive sounds that reflect the morbidity the band’s name implies.
Soothing, industrial soundscapes are created by the musicians’ use of drones, bells, and gently bowed strings. Often noises crescendo into destruction before returning to a state of post-apocalyptic calm.
It is impossible to parcel out the sounds each musician is making in these live recordings. Franz Loriot’s viola flitters and squeals into the sonic territory inhabited by Sean Ali’s howling bass. Bells ring, surfaces grumble -- occasionally a low thud clues us in: we are hearing Carlo Costa’s approach to playing the drums.
In Natura Morta, old world meets decaying Midwest. Carlo, Frantz and Sean, hailing from Rome, Paris, and Dayton, Ohio respectively, have come together to create an otherworldly album that is mysterious, dark and intriguing.

Dancing on the borders between free jazz, chamber music, and vocalized song is something few bands have attempted to do. Sons of Daughters, in their fourth release on Sulde Records, tread these juxtaposed territories with a confidence that molds them into a singular and refreshing sound.
Places, the second track on the album, begins with bassist Aaron Darrell’s voice singing an almost impossible melody; soaring upwards through dissonance only to twist and land in lilting cadences. In their jazzier moments, the band sounds a bit like Mark Helias’ Open Loose, a great tenor trio of a previous generation. Constantly meandering from well established cohesion into loose interaction and back again, often many times in a single song.
On Beyond Animals, Sons of Daughters display their mastery of the art of compositional improvisation. Even in his furiously cascading lines, reeds player Patrick Breiner conveys the harmonic material of the songs, perpetually repurposing melodies that fly over Devin Drobka’s ever shifting backdrop of drums. Listening to Sons of Daughters, it is clear that they are playing tunes, but they convey them with the freedom and comfort that comes only from the telepathic connection that all great bands develop.
This musical connection is something SoDs, as true road warriors, have earned. If you are on the east coast or in the midwest this June I recommend finding them, in a jazz club, gallery, or busted out basement near you.

A new take on experimental music is audible on VaVatican’s debut release from Prom Night Records. SoSoviet is neither a jazz nor noise record, and is decidedly not “free improvisation.” Lyrics and vocal harmonies emerge out of sparse pointillistic textures. Steady rhythms clang against frenzied un-pitched saxophones; juxtapositions abound. It is eloquently articulated absurdity.
As improvisors, each of these musicians is developing sonic vocabularies and musical tendencies unique to themselves. Alto saxophonist Nathaniel Morgan employs various preparations in order to create his array of sounds; among these are a scotch-taped mouthpiece that, when applied to his horn, results in subtle and unusual multi-phonics. Drummer Booker Stardrum and guitarist Owen Stewart-Robertson both use contact microphones to attain scratchy low-fi effects. Weston Minessali’s analogue synthesizer allows him to create wobbly sub-bass, piercing squeals, and everything in between.
The recording studio, as a medium, provides its own set of limitations and freedoms, in reality quite different from live performance. This is something rarely acknowledged by improvising musicians who often view recording as an act of documentation. VaVatican, in their approach to the studio as a compositional tool, have created something that far surpasses what mere documentation could. Of course Nathaniel Morgan, saxophonist and sound engineer, is not working with the engineering capabilities of industry great Nigel Godrich. Instead he is figuring out how to work wonders in his one room studio in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and SoSoviet, especially when listened to in that context, is evidence of his success.
For the most part the tracks showcase an anti-narrative ethos. Instead of explicit beginning-middle-end structures, VaVatican has sewn together musical patchworks. These episodic compositions rely more on the construction of sonic “zones” than on melody and form. Textures vary: some are incredibly dense and chaotic, like the crescendo on the opening track, others are strangely beautiful, like the voice chorale in “Chirps.” Zosia," the most “song-like” of the pieces, features some “smooth-jazz” alto sax licks that are downright hilarious.
Humor is a big part of this recording, but it tends to serve the music. On track two of the album, Weston’s synthesizer recreates the exact buzz of a speaker glitch, which lasts long enough for one to consider whether their stereo is broken. In one regard this is merely an inside joke amongst the band. However, it engages the act of listening, inducing those hearing it to get up and address the noise. This blurring of the divide between intended and, presumably, unintended noise is one of the many instances of VaVatican toying with listeners’ musical perceptions.
VaVatican represent an odd class of performer. Most of their album is serious, strange, and technically well executed, but they end it with a ska-band style thank you track, complete with inside jokes and cheesy backing guitar line. SoSoviet, in its sincere and comical moments alike, is truly a refreshing take on experimental music.

F $ F [FIVE DOLLAR FERRARI: BRAD HENKEL/DUSTIN CARLSON] - F $ F [Ltd #d Ed of 100] (Prom Night; USA) Five Dollar Ferrari features Brad Henkel on trumpet & electronics and Dustin Carlson on guitar & electronics. Just about very week some younger Downtown musicians wander into DMG and leave us (me) with a promo of theirs. I never know what I might find, but I am endlessly intrigued by the tidal wave of interesting self-produced discs. Trumpeter Brad Henkel has worked with percussionist Dave Grollman here at DMG while guitarist Dustin Carlson has also played here with Ben Stapp, Brian Drye & Jacob Wick. Brad and Dustin just left us with 2 new discs to check out, a duo (F $ F) and a trio (Sunshine Soldier)
F$F- This two-track CD consists of two pieces, clocking in at about 40 minutes. The first track was composed by Brad and it is hushed, elegant and minimal work. The trumpet breathes slowly in and out like the sound of a radiator from the next room, the guitar strums one chord at a time, lovely and sad. There is a distant wave, the hum of the guitar provides a shimmering drone, the person next to you is snoring quietly for a change. An effective soft spoken vocal section occurs towards the end of the first piece talking about solitude. The duo do a fine job of layering lines of trumpet and guitar lines in a mesmerizing haze with the words at the center. The noisy guitar, trumpet and vocal layer eventually erupt into a dramatic conclusion which I found astonishing. The second piece also starts quietly and minimally and builds from there. Mr. Henkel has a lovely, warm tone on his trumpet which he uses selectively one note at a time. Again we get a short bit of spoken word before the duo move into a rather odd, mechanical yet warped groove and then break down to fractured weirdness. There is something both rude and cool about this piece. Who else would put Beefheartian guitar and loud flatulent trumpet together?!? SUNSHINE SOLDIER [BRAD HENKEL/DUSTIN CARLSON/BOOKER STARDRUM] - Sunshine Soldier [Ltd #d Ed of 100] (Prom Night; USA) Brad Henkel on trumpet, Dustin Carlson on baritone guitar and Booker Stardrum on drums & melodica. Both Brad Henkel (with Dave Grollman) and Dustin Carlson (w/ Benn Stapp & Jacob Wick) have played here at DMG during our weekly free Sunday series. I am not so sure about Booker Stardrum, is this his real name? "Liek" was written by Mr. Henkel and it is a tight and twisted piece with marching drums at the beginning, followed by a mysterious sparse section. As the intensity builds, the guitar and trumpet start adding layers of reverberating lines until we enter into a cyclone-like storm. The trio again builds up from a skeletal groove while the trumpet shreds higher and higher until the powerful conclusion. "Aret" by Mr. Stardrum begins with some quaint melodica before the sparse space takes over. Again the trio takes their time to add soft fragments, a few at a time. I dig the way they expand on the post lower-case organic improv by adding melodic fragments at certain points. Booker plays just rubbed cymbals while Brad plays some lovely, soft drums and Dustin plucks a swell, slow melody thus creating a somber dreamworld soundscape. F $ F [FIVE DOLLAR FERRARI: BRAD HENKEL/DUSTIN CARLSON] - F $ F [Ltd #d Ed of 100] (Prom Night; USA) Five Dollar Ferrari features Brad Henkel on trumpet & electronics and Dustin Carlson on guitar & electronics. Just about very week some younger Downtown musicians wander into DMG and leave us (me) with a promo of theirs. I never know what I might find, but I am endlessly intrigued by the tidal wave of interesting self-produced discs. Trumpeter Brad Henkel has worked with percussionist Dave Grollman here at DMG while guitarist Dustin Carlson has also played here with Ben Stapp, Brian Drye & Jacob Wick. Brad and Dustin just left us with 2 new discs to check out, a duo (F $ F) and a trio (Sunshine Soldier)
F$F- This two-track CD consists of two pieces, clocking in at about 40 minutes. The first track was composed by Brad and it is hushed, elegant and minimal work. The trumpet breathes slowly in and out like the sound of a radiator from the next room, the guitar strums one chord at a time, lovely and sad. There is a distant wave, the hum of the guitar provides a shimmering drone, the person next to you is snoring quietly for a change. An effective soft spoken vocal section occurs towards the end of the first piece talking about solitude. The duo do a fine job of layering lines of trumpet and guitar lines in a mesmerizing haze with the words at the center. The noisy guitar, trumpet and vocal layer eventually erupt into a dramatic conclusion which I found astonishing. The second piece also starts quietly and minimally and builds from there. Mr. Henkel has a lovely, warm tone on his trumpet which he uses selectively one note at a time. Again we get a short bit of spoken word before the duo move into a rather odd, mechanical yet warped groove and then break down to fractured weirdness. There is something both rude and cool about this piece. Who else would put Beefheartian guitar and loud flatulent trumpet together?!? SUNSHINE SOLDIER [BRAD HENKEL/DUSTIN CARLSON/BOOKER STARDRUM] - Sunshine Soldier [Ltd #d Ed of 100] (Prom Night; USA) Brad Henkel on trumpet, Dustin Carlson on baritone guitar and Booker Stardrum on drums & melodica. Both Brad Henkel (with Dave Grollman) and Dustin Carlson (w/ Benn Stapp & Jacob Wick) have played here at DMG during our weekly free Sunday series. I am not so sure about Booker Stardrum, is this his real name? "Liek" was written by Mr. Henkel and it is a tight and twisted piece with marching drums at the beginning, followed by a mysterious sparse section. As the intensity builds, the guitar and trumpet start adding layers of reverberating lines until we enter into a cyclone-like storm. The trio again builds up from a skeletal groove while the trumpet shreds higher and higher until the powerful conclusion. "Aret" by Mr. Stardrum begins with some quaint melodica before the sparse space takes over. Again the trio takes their time to add soft fragments, a few at a time. I dig the way they expand on the post lower-case organic improv by adding melodic fragments at certain points. Booker plays just rubbed cymbals while Brad plays some lovely, soft drums and Dustin plucks a swell, slow melody thus creating a somber dreamworld soundscape.
